Women in the community of Diender are delighted to begin caring for poultry in their new poultry shed! Long interested in starting their own poultry cooperative, they have waited patiently for this opportunity. Now, with training and support from CREATE!, Diender cooperative members can pursue their shared economic ambitions.

Just this week, the Diender cooperative purchased their first batch of chicks and installed them in the poultry shed. Women will care for the chickens as they grow and then, at the end of April, sell the grown chickens in the Diender market and in other nearby communities. Women will also be able to supplement the diets of their families with the chicken that they raise themselves.

The well-constructed shed can withstand heavy rain, punishing heat, and incursions from curious (and hungry) animals.

In February, CREATE! field technicians worked with Diender cooperative members to build the community’s poultry shed using handmade cement bricks and other materials. A group of volunteers worked hard to construct the shed in the compound of Adama Gueye, CREATE!’s community volunteer in Diender. Adama works to support CREATE! programs in his community and his wife is an active participant in the Diender cooperative.
